We had a number of firsts in the tropics today — for the first time in recorded history, two Category 5 hurricanes have made landfall in the Atlantic Basin in the same year. Matter of fact… it happened in less than two weeks! Hurricane Dean hit the Yucatan as a CAT 5 in August and then Hurricane Felix slammed into Nicaragua as a CAT 5 this morning. So, 2 huge storms in 2 weeks — and you have to go back 15 YEARS (Hurricane Andrew in 1992) for the last time a storm so strong made landfall.
Another first was the fact that two different hurricanes hit North/Central America on the same day — Felix hitting Nicaragua and Henriette making landfall near Cabo San Lucas — both today! Storms have hit within 24 hours of each other… but never on the same day. If you’re the kind of person who likes stats and keeps an eye on the tropics… September 4, 2007 truly was an historic day.
